Power of Words:
LGBTQIA+ History

2021
Mixed Media & Procreate

Inspired by the histories of LGBTQI+ activism and feminism, this artwork was developed through a process of immersive research and intuitive creation. While listening to documentaries, protest recordings, and speeches by influential historical figures, the artist transcribed the words spoken—allowing these powerful statements to form the foundation of the visual work. In essence, the research and the artistic process unfolded simultaneously, with the words themselves becoming the central visual element. Once the text was laid down, colour was introduced using Procreate, adding depth and vibrancy. The resulting composition resembles graffiti, conveying a raw, urgent energy. The rapid, layered writing evokes a sense of immediacy and protest. As the words overlap, they create texture and complexity, encouraging the viewer to examine the piece closely—deciphering fragments of text and engaging with the research as though undertaking it themselves.
