Bjorn Chircop (b. 1997) is an emerging artist based in Malta whose
practice centres on the lived experiences of vibrant queer
communities. Their work engages with the philosophy of
performativity, as theorised by Judith Butler, which understands
identity as something continuously constructed through repeated
social and cultural acts. As an active volunteer with MGRM, Malta’s
leading LGBTQIA+ advocacy organisation, Chircop seeks to further
their engagement with the community through artistic practice that is
both participatory and reflective. Chircop’s approach is
multidisciplinary, often contrasting themes such as expression and
repression, visibility and invisibility, freedom and constraint. A key
element in their recent work is the use of fabric as a symbolic and
expressive medium. Fabric serves both as a metaphor for personal
identity and as a material that requires structure, tension and care to
hold form. This duality mirrors the complexities of queer life fluid yet
resilient, soft yet strong. In the ongoing project titled Portraits, Chircop
deepens this exploration by working with donated garments and
personal belongings. These objects are used as vessels of memory
and identity, allowing the artist to trace and honour the lived histories
of individuals within the queer community. Through this process,
Portraits becomes both an act of documentation and an intimate
form of portraiture, drawing attention to the beauty and strength
embedded in the everyday.
