Gender Status
2023Clothes & Offcut fabrics
Chircop’s work embarks on a journey exploring the concept of gender, with the intention of representing a broad spectrum of gender identities within a single artistic expression. Central to this piece is the element of wearability, rooted in the idea that clothing reflects who we are—whether it speaks to our present selves or past identities, it becomes part of an ongoing narrative of evolution and self-discovery. A key aspect of the making process was the deliberate choice not to cut the donated garments, but to fold them, preserving their integrity and the personal histories embedded within. Chircop challenges the conventional imposition of gender onto inanimate objects, proposing instead that objects—particularly clothing—serve as reflections of individual identity, inherently unique and personal. In this work, the concept of gender is deconstructed, reducing the object’s assigned identity to its most essential form: textile.
